WHAT ARE RIMADYL PALATABLE TABLETS FOR DOGS
?
Rimadyl Palatable Tablets for dogs are a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) containing the active ingredient carprofen. Rimadyl tablets for dogs are supplied as square light brown tablets containing either 20mg, 50mg or 100mg carprofen. Each size of tablet is supplied in pots of either 14, 30 or 100 tablets. Rimadyl tablets are very palatable and readily eaten by dogs but can be given with food if necessary. Rimadyl tablets are only licensed for use in dogs and should not be given to cats. Rimadyl is also available as an injection that can be administered by your vet. Rimadyl is manufactured by PFIZER. Rimadyl is not licensed for use in cats - cats requiring a non steroidal anti-inflammatory should be treated with metacam oral suspension for cats.

WHAT ARE RIMADYL PALATABLE TABLETS USED FOR?
Rimadyl palatable tablets for dogs are used as an anti-inflammatory to treat a wide range of conditions in dogs. They are commonly used to relieve pain in both short and longterm conditions. One of the most common uses of rimadyl in dogs is in the treatment of arthritis (osteoarthritis, stiff joints, degenerative joint disease). They can also be used to treat other painful conditions in dogs. For example post operative pain relief following routine neutering / spaying, orthopaedic surgery ( eg fractured bone repair or cruciate ligament surgery), following injuries such as a dog bite, for pain associated with muscle sprains or lameness, or for pain caused by tumours / cancer.

RIMADYL TABLETS -
TOP TIPS

  • Rimadyl should be used under the guidance of your veterinary surgeon
  • Rimadyl can be given with or without food
  • Rimadyl can be administered once daily or the daily dose can be split and given twice daily
  • Discard unused rimadyl according the expiry date on the bottle or drug label
  • Weigh your pet regularly to ensure accurate dosing with rimadyl
  • If you accidentally overdose your dog with rimadyl contact your vet immediately
  • Store at room temperature and not above 25˚C
  • Store rimadyl securely out of reach and site of children and dogs
  • Wash your hands after handling the product
  • If you notice any side effects then stop treatment and contact your vet
  • Treatment with a joint supplement (e.g. seraquin, cosequin, or synoquin) in addition to rimadyl can benefit dogs suffering with arthritis
  • You must not use rimadyl tablets in cats Cats requiring NSAID treatment should be treated with metacam oral suspension for cats.


RIMADYL FOR DOGS - SIDE EFFECTS

  • Rimadyl is a very safe drug that is widely used and has very few serious side effects
  • The commonest side effects are loss of appetite, sickness (vomiting) and diarrhoea (sometimes with blood)
  • Most side effects will occur within the first week of treatment and will generally resolve once treatment is stopped
  • Less common side effects include liver and kidney problems, blood clotting problems, and stomach ulcers
  • If used carefully and according to you vets instructions these side effects are rare
  • Your vet would not have prescribed rimadyl if he/she did not believe that the potential benefits outweighed the very small risk of side effects
  • If your pet suffers any side effects stop treatment and contact your vet
  • Do not use rimadyl in dogs less than six weeks old
  • Do not use rimadyl in pregnant or lactating dogs
  • Do not use rimadyl in dogs with pre-existing heart,liver or kidney problems

  • Rimadyl is dosed according to bodyweight
  • Accurate dosing is essential therefore weigh your pet regularly
  • Rimadyl tablets come in three sizes containing 20mg, 50mg or 100mg carprofen
  • The tables sizes all come in bottles containing 14, 30 or 100 tablets
  • Tablets are scored so that they can be accurately halved to facilitate more accurate dosing
  • The maintenance dose rate is 2mg per kg bodyweight per day given as a single dose or in two equally divided doses
  • An initial dose rate of 2 - 4mg / kg per day may be given for 7 days
  • Your vet should tell you what dose rate to use / how many tablets to give - if in doubt - check
  • Never exceed the stated dose
